When Hakob Kazanjyan came to Armenia to study in 2006, it wasn’t at all out of the ordinary for someone in his family. On the contrary, it was almost a rite of passage.
“Before me, my sister had come here to study as well,” he explains. “In fact, most members of my family had done the same. My sister did this, and my parents before her. In our family, it was accepted that you would come to Armenia, at the very least, to study and maybe even to live here afterwards as well.”
Initially Hakob came to study at the National University of Architecture and Construction of Armenia, but decided to switch professions without completing his studies there. However, when it came time to find work, he had some trouble.
“Needless to say, the employment opportunities were not the same back then as they are now. Eventually, I decided that if I could not find a job within one month’s time, I would go back to Syria. Maybe not permanently, but at least for some time I would have to go back.”
Ironically, the very next day, he got a call from a friend with a job offer. His friend, also a repatriate from Syria, was starting a web programming company and wanted to speak to him regarding potential employment.
“It was a very critical point in time for me,” says Hakob. “And even though I never imagined working in this field, programming was something that had interested me for years, going back to my school years. And because of that, I did not reject his offer and that was how I got into the IT field.”
And though he didn’t stay at that specific company for too long, Hakob is to this day in the IT field. After a few different jobs in the same field and a couple of years of freelancing, he decided to try his luck at opening a company with a friend. And so, in 2017, they founded WiseSource, an information technology and web developing service provider which they still run to this day.
“It’s incomparably different,” says Hakob when asked about the difference between the Armenia he arrived at in 2006 and modern Armenia. “From the external factors, like the look of the city, to the values, mentality, and interpersonal relationships of the people.”
“There are far more opportunities for people too,” he continues. “Today- and this applies to all fields, not just IT- a young specialist with enough flexibility can realistically work with any company, boss, or client from around the world.”
As far as advice for any visitors or potential repatriates, Hakob thinks it’s all in coming here with an open mind and leaving your preconceived notions- good or bad- behind.
“Be open- open to any idea, any offer, any person. Don’t come with any stereotypes or stories or anything you heard in the past about the people in Armenia being good or being bad. Just be prepared for the fact that any environment gives you the opportunity to meet any sort of person. Jump into the environment and let it show you what it has to offer you.”
